I remember picking blueberries off the bush, sunwarmed and flecked with sweetness. They hardly made it into the pail as most of those juicy orbs went directly into my mouth. Years later I tasted Japanese wagashi (jewel-like sweet cakes for Emperor and citizens alike), and I marvelled how lovely the sweet rice and fresh fruit would taste together. Here’s my artistic interpretation of this heavenly combination, with a sweet message and hidden design within.
