About the Designer
Having recently lived in Asia for over a decade, Washington D.C.-based designer Doris Chou Durfee searches for uncommon materials as inspiration for her pieces. Whether they incorporate vintage crystals from the old bazaar in Kashgar, volcanized agate from Mount Arshan in Inner Mongolia, or handcut sapphires from Thailand, every AMULET by D piece is unique and painstakingly crafted by hand.
From childhood, Doris has been fascinated by the striking designs of Byzantine jewelry. One piece in particular, a magnificent emerald and gold ring from a Mediterranean shipwreck, inspired her to search markets in Athens, Crete, London and Rome for similar pieces. Her desire to understand the technique behind such beauty led to Doris' later training at the Jewelry Arts Institute in New York City, ASIMI in Hong Kong, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing.
An avid traveler, Doris also uses native raw materials from different locales and draws from local handicraft traditions in her designs. Now, after more than 15 years as an editor and marketing executive, Doris has returned to her early passion for jewelry. Through her designs, she hopes to share her love of the rare and beautiful.
